In short, Apple has filed suit against HTC for patent infringement, but it's fairly clear after looking over the 20 patents in question that the target is not just HTC, but the Android platform as a whole.  I'll let the links below do the talking, as there's a lot to take in with this development.

Yeah, it's a bit ridiculous they can't really expect to monopolize the market on the technology and yet that seems like exactly what they are trying to do. I've got a Google G1 myself and find this somewhat hilarious of a case, but by the same token if they have the patents then it should be their right to support them.

I think that the reason that they are suing isnt the fact that they are trying to create a monopoly, its the fact that when someone releases something everyone does everything they can to duplicate the technology instead of making it their own. The concept of the iPhone was one of the first new technologies out at the time and the fact that all these new droid phones are exactly the same thing as the iPhone technology with just a few tweaks.

That's true in a sense, but it's a completely different platform. I mean granted, a lot of the usage of the phones remains similar to help inspire competitiveness between brands and to encourage people to switch, but the Android phones haven't exactly been a secret and they have now been out for well over a year and a half.

My question is why now?
